Team building

Team building that people do not dread

Built around your group rather than a catalogue — with a real task, mixed abilities accounted for, and nobody asked to perform in front of their colleagues.

What makes a corporate team-building day actually work?

A team-building day works when it gives people a genuine task and a reason to talk to colleagues they do not normally sit with. It fails when it asks people to perform, or quietly excludes anyone on grounds of fitness or confidence. Format matters less than fit.

What we run

Six kinds of day that reliably land

This is not a catalogue to pick from. It is a sense of what works, so the conversation starts somewhere useful.

Cooking and food

Competitive cookery, wine tasting, a market trip and a kitchen. Works for almost any group, and nobody has to be sporty.

On the water

Sailing regattas, dragon boats, paddleboarding. Real teamwork with an obvious result, and a genuine leveller.

Problem solving

Escape rooms, treasure hunts and city challenges built around a place rather than a car park.

Motorsport and driving

Karting, off-road, track days. Reliably popular, and easy to run alongside a hospitality day.

Country pursuits

Clay shooting, archery, falconry. Suits senior groups and mixed abilities better than most people expect.

Charity and build

Bike builds, renovation days, hampers for a local cause. Good when the day needs to mean something beyond the team.

Formats

How long it needs to be

Team-building formats compared by what each suits
FormatBest forIn practice
Half dayBolted onto a meeting or conferenceTwo to three hours of activity with lunch either side. The easiest thing to get signed off.
Full dayTeams travelling in anywayMorning activity, proper lunch, afternoon session. Enough time for something with substance.
ResidentialTeams that rarely meet in personOne or two nights. The dinner matters as much as the activity — that is where the team actually forms.
OverseasA reward that doubles as a team eventA short-haul city or coastal trip. Often no dearer than a UK country house once you have added rooms.

Questions

The things people ask

Our team hates forced fun. What do you suggest?
Most people do. The activities that work are the ones with a real task and a reason to talk to someone you do not normally sit near — cooking, a sailing regatta, a treasure hunt built around a city. What fails is anything that asks people to perform in front of colleagues.
How long should a team-building day be?
A half day bolted onto a meeting is the most common and the easiest to justify. A full day works when the group is travelling anyway. An overnight changes the dynamic completely, because the evening is where the useful conversations happen.
Can you work around mixed abilities?
Yes, and it matters more than most briefs admit. We ask about mobility, confidence in water, dietary needs and anything else that would leave someone sitting out. An activity that excludes one person has failed at the thing it was meant to do.
Do you do anything for remote or hybrid teams?
For teams that rarely meet, the answer is usually to get everyone in one place properly rather than to run something online. A residential day or two does more than six months of video calls.
How far from Manchester do you go?
Cheshire and the Peak District are within an easy drive and cover most requests. The Lakes, North Wales and the Yorkshire Dales suit residentials. For something bigger, a European city break for a team is often no more expensive than a UK country house.
